    you need to state metric / english ? G20 G21 or if an old machine G70 / G71 71= metric absolute G90 or incremental G91 then you need a datum !!! FIRST RULE OF ENGINEERING ? ESTABLISH A DATUM ! will this be under a G54 X / Z ? I use
    G71
    G90
    G54
    X ???? Z ???

I hope this helps , if not you are welcome to ask

Which control? What lathe? It can make a difference. I see you are in the UK. G20/G21 should already be set to metric by default, so no need to program this code unless you are going to switch back and forth between the two. Highly unlikely. Don't you have a manual for the lathe?

so my program might start (toolpost in front not back)

    P9100 (prog no)
    N10 G21 (metric)
N20 G40 G00 X400 Z200 T0100 (toolno no comp tool change in safe position) M03 (spindle on anti)
N30 G41 X60 Y2 T0103 M08 (tool comp on coolant on) start point of canned cycle
then program canned cycle i,e, G72(longtitudinal area clearance)
