Ok hope I got this correct but can I do this with 4 switches or am I better off just using 2 switches for X and 2 for y?

if you have enough pins on your breakout board for wiring limits individually, then that is the way to go. This way each switch activates one pin and the controller can know and tell you which limit switch is tripped. This would require 6 pins to be used for a 3-axis machine for limits (+X, -X, +Y, -Y, +Z,-Z)

Wiring them in series is done when there are not enough pins. In this case do what you can. If you have 3 pins that can be used for limits then do one pin for each axis. For example +X and -X wired in series on one pin and so on

You can wire all 6 of the limits in series and connect to one pin if that is all you have available. Depends on the setup.

I personally would do all individually if possible and enough pins available, and reduce from there.
