Running Heidenhain scales without air?

Any thoughts on running linear scales without the sealing air supply?

90% of my air load is just for these scales - It's an expensive and noisy thing, I'll happily do without if safe to do so.

The scales are all behind bellows, Not using any coolant etc.

From what I understand the air is for keeping coolant out ?
