For a period Win automatically upgraded 7 to 10 no charge, now I believe they charge for it.

How large population, or which race/skin color/nationality is required to "warrant" stealing?

That is not true at all. There is no such thing as "glued-in" drivers in laptops.

Hi.......I'm told that only applies to the motherboards that laptop computers use due to their very small and compact size which makes them special.

.I have 3 Toshiba Sattelite laptops, bought cheap at auction, and non has the system disc.....only one has Win XP the others won't load Windows....they keep asking for the system disc.

I don't know how you can "steal" Windows opn system software.....even if you have the licence that comes with every copy you purchase you still have to contact Microsoft quoting the licence no. to get the verification code to enable the install to happen.....and it's something like 24 characters long in 6 blocks of 4 characters per block....unique to the computer your installing on.

You won't get past contacting Microsoft a second time to go cheap and try to install on another computer too as they will inform you the licence is already in use......I have to wonder what happens if your HDD crashes and you fit a new HDD and try to re-install your copy of Win on the same computer but a different drive......it happened to me with Win XP some years back, but I forget how I did the new install.

You contradicted yourself there Gerry, I thought that was my specialty! "If they are available" is the key wording.

All notebooks are "brand name" products. Not like a desktop assembled from parts scrounged off the Internet. If a notebook comes out with Windows XP The disk of the supplied version of Windows already has drivers for their components in the Windows software. If you then try to install Windows 7 on the same notebook, it will run like a dog if drivers are not available. If you try to upgrade from XP to Win7,8,8.1 or 10 it won't happen unless drivers for the notebook are available. Most manufacturers of Notebooks know very well about this and don't put drivers for future version of Windows on their site. HP and Dell are just 2 brands that do this. All you'll end up with is a load of crap on a previously working computer.

Hmmm......so all I need to solve my little problem with the non functioning Toshiba laptops I mentioned is to ask the manufacturers for a driver for XP etc?

Would this be a complete Win XP program install disc for the Toshiba with driver or just the driver and I then need to buy the regular Win XP program install disc to get the licence etc?

2 or more people constitutes a population... On my island anyway. They can be black or white we don't discriminate here. They can also be any nationality just as long as they agree to become "Robe River" citizens which will automatically qualify them for Robe River passports.

Stealing is roughly the same as piracy except you don't need a boat or any programing skills. Pirate software is what you get when you buy a Chinese 6040 3 or 4 Axis router off Ebay... Stolen from the legal owners and/or developers of it. Windows is so hard to steal now, its probably easier to use Linux. Linus Torvalds doesn't mind you using it as long as you don't try to change his core coding. Linus is the Finish/American who as a student modified Unix and got away without being accused of stealing the code because of confusing US patent and copyright laws that allowed him to do what no one else is now allowed to do.

Ian... Log onto Support.toshiba.com and enter the model of your laptop. Navigate your way to 'drivers' and download the drivers applicable to your laptop. Get hold of a Windows XP disk and choose to 'boot from CD' when prompted. Then you can format the hard drive, create a partition and install windows. Once its running, install the drivers you got from Toshiba. Simple huh?

Be aware that in Australia the Trade Practices Act requires manufacturers to provide access to stuff like this for 7 years after they stop selling the product. I don't believe British law is much different but I'm told American laws don't give a hoot if you stop making something and don't supply any parts or software for it from that day on. Sounds like a dangerous place to live to me. Did you know they carry guns over there? Have you ever seen one? They are made from steel and have explosive in them that propels things called bullets so fast they can go right through you. Boy... I'm glad John Howard smashed up all the guns he could find. The only people who have them in Australia now are cops and tattooed Harley Davidson owners. Or so the TV news wants us to beleive.

LOL.....guns you say.....when I was in the South African Air Force...many years ago....if you called your rifle a gun you were threatened with parading in front of the flight with your dick in your hand and saying "This is my rifle, and this is my gun, this is for shooting and this is for fun".....LOL....no one ever did......I think it originated in the British army....whatever.

Thanks for the Toshiba info and the link.....I'll give it a try......but I would have to load the driver first as the computer has a message on the screen at switch on to..... "insert system disc".....and you can't get past that, unless you're a geeky one and can talk to computers.......they're very strange secretive people those.

I'm told that the system disc for a laptop has to be a special cut down version of Windows, specially made for that computer due to the type of motherboard used.....I hardly think Toshiba will give it a s free download......I may be wrong on that....won't know until I contact them.
