Hard to know exactly where to post this. I've been using my machine for close to a year now and I'm amazed at how my home-built CNC can execute tiny changes in code and do such consistently good work despite my rookie status. One thing that's bothered me since day one is a metallic sounding clank each time I reset Mach. Each time I start the program it requires a reset. I assume that's the way it's supposed to be. But each time I click on it at start up or after I bump a limit, I get this disturbing clank. You can even feel it in the frame. I can't help but think somethings being damaged or at least thrown off position. I do have rack and pinion in all three axes and I suppose it could be related to that. But I really have no idea. I have 640oz stepper motors. Anyone got any ideas? |

| Emergency stop removes power from your steppers, I believe, so when power is restored after a reset, all the steppers do a thump as they line up with their nearest step. I got used to it, and try to use soft limits, so I never need emergency stop. Why do you need to reset. Put a M30 at the end of your program, or use the rewind button. You can hit program stop (Escape) at any time, then manually retract Z, hit rewind. And restart your program - no clunks except at initial power-up. Even changing programs does not require reset. Just Hit STOP. It sounds worse than it is I think. Just 3 or more strong steppers jumping half a step or so to line up with the nearest pole. Make sure the couplings to the stepper motors are well secured against slippage. ![]()

| 2. How do soft limits work? 3. Why do I need to reset? From inadvertently slamming into a switch while manually moving the spindle for cleaning the table, clamping the piece, etc. Another way I "bump out" is when I try running the Write Wizard. I haven't quite figured out how it zeros and consequently it runs into a switch before I can stop it. |
