Buy me a Beer?

1 Ghz if you want to run in 25Khz mode, 2Gz for 45Khz, and even faster if you want 100Khz. I'd also get a Gig of RAM or more, but it will run on less.

The manual says 1ghz pc or better on Win. XP or 2000, desktop

This is the Mach3 manual I have, they might have a later release.

Right click the link and "SAVE TARGET AS..." it's a 5.62mb pdf file.

Mach3 will run on Vista. There are instructions for Vista at the forum at www.machsupport.com

Yes, but if you are stuck with Vista, you will need more CPU and RAM to have the same levels of performance as XP/2K.

You can still buy Windows XP Pro and most OEM's still offer XP Pro as an option. You just have to ask for it. I would stay away from Vista until Microsoft gets SP1 out for it. It has a lot of problems with drivers and general configuration issues.

Single vs Dual Core for Mach, etc

Hi, I am slowly working my way toward a home built cnc router. The plan is to use Mach 3 running steppers, etc. The OS decision of Vista or XP is still open (I am comfortable with either and use both every day)

Drawing software like Lazy Cam, GCam, and possibly meshcam will also be on this computer.

I am looking at picking up a used desktop for the controller, and wondered if either of these have an advantage

a) AMD Athlon 64 single core 2.7 ghz with strong video card
b) AMD Athlon 64x2 dual core 2.2 ghz with modest video card.

The bottom line I guess - does Mach or LazyCam benefit from dual core on XP or Vista ?

Thanks

HarryN

Don't forget to factor into this idea a motherboard with a parallel port.

Parallel ports are quickly disappearing from desktop computers. I ended up buying a motherboard that uses a 2-3 year old chipset just so I could get a parallel port. It is not surprising, since most new printers use USB. There was only 1 pre-built desktop system on the floor that had a parallel port.
