Mach3 and parallel breakoutboard PINS

Hello,

Im trying to setup a breakout board with mach3.

I have a breakout board and a stepper driver for higher voltages.

The driver is an l298 and has input ENA IN1 IN2 IN3 IN4 ENB,
output motor A(1,2) and motor B(1,2).

When ENA and IN1 or IN2 is high the output A is VMS, same with ENB.

I have setup a dir and step in mach and tried to wire them to driver inputs but motor only locks up or buzzes.

This is my first breakout wiring, the motor is a 4 wire.

Hi, pin setup can be a pain. Take a minuet and check your ramping time and rapid traverse. Outside chance you have it wired correctly, but maybe set up parameters are asking it to hit more than top RPM, in no seconds! Good luck

Yes, ive come to think of if i where to connect the stepper straight to the lpt, does mach3 support that?

L298 is just a driver chip for the stepper, or linear brush motor.
You need dirive circuitry to sequence the 4 inputs.

This chip is normally driven from some sort of CPU, or another pre-driver chip.

To drive it from Mach3 you need a L297 chip driving the L298

Download application notes/data and study them. See page 8...

Hi ros2468 ,

are you using a L297 IC to convert the Mach 3 step and direction signals
to the 2 enable and 4 inputs for the L298 ???

the circuit diagram for the board you have built will make it easier to help

this step and direction tester circuit from Gecko drive com
could help you to test your driver board :--

We both hit the same nail on the head at the same minute, half a world away!

Hello again. Ive searched the google for a solution and come up with this schematic for a l298 & l297,
If this works with mach3 ive have 2x l298 per l297,
Here is a picture.

This is easier than L6203, but dissipates more heat, but is easy to add heatsink.
Either will work with Mach3.

Mach3 direction pin goes to CW/CCW (17 on L297)
Mach3 step pin goes to CLOCK (18 on L297)

You allocate the Mach3 pins in Mach3 ports and pins, etc.

You need to terminate the other pins on L297 according to the L297 app notes.

The circuit layout details are important as far as correct connection of the 0v and sense pins, for the circuit to function as designed.

see page 16 for what needs to connected to each pin, and it's function.
http://www.technologicalarts.com/myfiles/data/AN470.pdf

Lots of more information, good, bad and suspect
Do a google search for L297 and click on images.

This is close to what you need. Only use as a guide.

Mach 3

Hi Niel see you are in the same region as me ( New Zealand )

Im looking for someone that has more experience with Mach 3 than me

My Background is Mechanical and i undertook to build a large Router

Wanting to chat to someone and help me iron out the last of the Issues

Jerky movements
Backlash compensation
Homing limits
