It is probably based on the acceleration value you have set for the steppers.
Ive set this machine up with optical switchesand MAch3 its working but I would like the machine not to travel so far past the switch before changing direction, it must be time based as the slower I set the homing speed up at it goes less past the trigger point. Any ideas where i change it I've looked, googled spent hours trying different thing, changed from mechanical to optical and am still having this issue, at least this way i'm not smashing switches anymore, optical seems the way to go

its is set to run pretty quickly (well for me it is) 10,000mm min and acceleration 600mm sec. do you think i should raise or lower the acceleration?
In Mach3 you can set the homing speed independent of the other speed settings, you want to home at a slow speed. Experiment to see what works best for you. Also you would want to increase the accel/decel
My guess is that it has to do with how (when) the switch is triggered.
As others have said, acceleration is the only other thing that would cause this, but it doesn't appear to be decelerating slowly.

Thanks for the help guys So ive played with speeds and acceleration found the acceleration anything over 2000 would only allow 20mm increments exactly almost like it was set in step mode so at 1900 its down to 18m its better but not perfect, now im finding that soft limits wont stop or slow the machine. it will stop the machine as it drives though the stop. just weird. also found a problem with reference all home it would skip the third and fourth step in the button sequence had to add 2 more. im amusing its all to do with the breakout board from digital dream DDSM5v5.0
Chinese controllers can cause all sorts of issues. Since homing is handled by the motion controller, then that could be the issue.
