plasma cutter issues

Hi everyone! This is my first time to post here, so I hope I am in the right spot. We have an old Burney 5 plasma cutter here and it has been doing some weird things. I called Burney, they say it's not a Burney problem, it's the power supply, called the power supply people and get the same run around. Anyways, first of all our autoheight controller has not been working. It constantly moves the torch down, doesn't matter if we are cutting or not. The motor on it is constantly going.

Next issue is our new torch will not fire. We use our smaller torch (that runs from different power supply) on and it works fine.

And finally, the torch moves in directions it's not programmed to go. Sometimes when you turn it on, it will just start moving on it's own way down the plate.

I appreciate any help you guys can give me! thanks a bunch!

The Burny 5 is the cnc controller that drives your cutting table. If you can provide more details regarding the type and cutting size of your machine .....is it a Koike, MG, Esab table?. Also....provide the brand and model of your plasma torches (Hypertherm, Thermal Dynamics?)...and the brand and type of your torch height control system (Hypertherm, InnerLogic?). With more info we can probably steer you in the right direction.

It is a Heath shape cutter, has a 4x8 table. It has an eye on one side for tracing and a table for that purpose (although we never use that). The auto height is a CG systems and the power supply is a very old thermal dynamics (we just got it back from repair shop and they said it was running fine). I am going to attach a picture here, maybe that will help describe it better. I think I figured out yesterday that the new torch may be the problem for it not firing. I had the guys put the old one on that runs off the same power supply and it ran just fine. We are still having the other problems that I wrote about though. Thanks for your help!!!

We had similar issues with our table taking off on it's own when the controller was turned on. We have a Burny 5 also. What ended up being the problem with ours was the encoders had gone flakey, sometimes they worked, and other times.... Finally one failed completely and after replacing it, it's been fine since.

Ahhh yes the Burny 5. I have had some experience with this controller more times than i would like. Some things you could do would be if you have a spare axis interface card you could try that. This can cause axis to drift i have seen this first hand. Now what can take this out has to be noise getting in. So what i would do is check that all you grounding is properly done. Your encoder should have shielding around it. IF any wires have been spliced or repaired. Go ahead and replace them so you have proper shielded cable.
Hope you can get a chance to try the card it may clear things up. Good old Burny it is never there fault LOL or any other company it is always someone else equipment gotta love it.
Good luck
Matt
