Buy me a Beer?
rs232 question

all our machines are wired to the network at which we hire a guy in to do all the wiring , something ive never bothered to pay attention to
what i want to do is load a program from a laptop ,
the communication on the machine is rs232

will a standard cable such as this work http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/ca...affixedcode=WW

i m going to be using cimco editor to upload from

also in the machine parameters it shows rs232c1 rs232c2 ,what would that be about ??

thanks
curt

Hi Curt

As the name implies "232" the wires are crossed pin2 on one end of your cable to pin 3 on the other and vise versa also connect pin 5 on both ends.

Hope this helps

Andy

Hi Curt

The link only takes you to a post code search.

I used a RS232 cord from a store and it blow a fuse on the I/O card. I had to custom make a RS232 cord for my Fanuc 10M.

Maybe Yes, Maybe No

Get an existing workng cable. Using a meter check for continuity on pin 2 between ends.

If there is continuity then it will work.

IF there is continuity from pin 2 to pin 3 then get a NULL MODEM cable.

Probably it will not work. I went through several places before I found one that had the correct cable.

Here is a picture showing the pin connections you can check.

Buy me a Beer?

Take a look here, http://www.cadem.com/dnc/ncnet_dncdetails-41.htm most machines are listed as to cable and parameters, I have found the majority will work with the three wire cable, i.e. Hardware handshake jumpered.

Buy me a Beer?

thanks guys ,
i think i'll wait to talk to our communications guy , i would hate to have something to go wrong and fry a machine port or something ,it looks pretty straight forward to make my own cable and all but i know i'm going to get stomped on if i blow it , it s nothing pressing at this point of time to have it , it s more for me to design on the fly any fixtures and such or to resolve programming issues or the odd government job , i do a fair bit of hand programming at the machine so this will make my life a lil easier, in my day any minutes saved are like gold and one less tylonol
