    [QUOTE=JohnReierson;1834592]

Based on the picture the probe and spindle mount appear to be 3d printed?
[It is nylon, turned by a lathe. Tried before 3D printing, but the concentricity is not good.]

Is the rotational axis that drives the spindle driven by a worm gear?
[Yes originally. But changed to other gear drive with less backlash.]

What made you decide to build this machine?
[Just for fun originally. Right now making a bigger one for Ostrich egg shell. Try to develop some business opportunity ]

I only have experience running a simple lathe or mill cnc: Is it harder to program this machine due to the two rotational axes (specifically the one that moves the spindle)? Are you running Mach3? If so, was it hard to set up the rotational axis to work on a cartesian coordinate system?
[I am using Mach2. I just cheat the system that I am working on 3 linear axis, that are X,Y and Z axis. Experience in CNC milling is more than sufficient]

I was thinking of building a SCARA 3d printer, but I have no idea how I would program it to work.
[Tons of learning materials in the net. Just spare some time for it will be OK ]

Hi I am interested in what software you used to do the probing
I just tested 4th axis probemaster in mach3
and I am a little confused because the data created is in x,y,z which is fine, but there is rotational data
so when I import the data into Mastercam it comes in with all lines in the same plane.

    Hi Squirrel,
Got no idea on the Mach3 probemaster, as I am still using the old Mach2.
And I wrote my own program to do the probing, used the old Visual Basic 6

Okay I can do do the programing but I need to be pointed in the right direction
the 4th axis probemaster returns all values for y as 0
So for all intents this is the same as a "single line 2d surface probe" moving only in the x direction with a z height
So if Y was converted to a value equal to the 4th axis rotation in a flat plane the data should represent a undulating 2d surface that I should be able to roll 360 Degrees.
    ???.

Or can I get a copy of your probe routine.
    Cheer's.

Okay I think I have a simple fix I'll create a program to rotate all data at X degrees a round the rotary axis.

Okay I built a macro in Mach3 that does all the conversion works real good.

Drilled 18.750 holes by 0.3mm dia PCB drill bit.
Position accuracy deteriorated significantly after drilled by about 2000 holes.
But luckily, no drill bit breakage after all holes have been drilled.

Thanks for that I have tried standard egg shells but the shell always break
    they are really thin.

Of course, if you used a very fine sand-blast jet, or a laser, you might manage those too?
