My collection of machine created art and stuff :)

Hello all,
Thought I would share what i have created with my homebuilt cnc.
It is only a small desktop machine with a cutting area of X-370mm, Y-285mm, Z-70mm with an Ozito 850w router for spindle driven by SuperPID (best purchase ever!), 3A Nema23 steppers driven by the Massmind.org thb6064 driver kits.
This is just a hobby for me and a thoroughly enjoyable one at that.

So enough natter and on with the pics
Here is the latest creation, a ball bearing maze made from mdf and clear acrylic.
These were my own design drawn up in bobcad v24.
Just single sided with an 11mm diameter steel ball.


This is another maze, but this time 2 sided and a bit smaller using 8mm steel ball (2 or more balls to make it a bit more of a challenge)

Some V-Carvings from a little while ago. done with a 90degree v bit.
These were just images taken from google and vectorized
I stained the mdf first then carved it with some of them.





Couple of 3d puzzles
Purchased the landrover plans from Makecnc.com, well worth it as you get very detailed assembly instructions and dxf files for both mm and inch.



Bought a rotary axis from fleabay for $280 and had a bit of a play.




Did a few Lithophanes with the 4th axis on white pvc pipe, lit up with led torch in the first one

This one i painted the pipe black first and carved a base and top for it and lit it with led strip light.
This is my sons night light now, he loves it!



And another V-carve, different method this time. Still just an image from google and vectorized but stained the mdf black before carving.


I have done a lot more but didn't take photos of them and have gifted them away.
I will post more pics of creations as i do them or find pics of

The PVC pipe lithophanes are very interesting to me.

I'm having trouble enlarging the photos - what is the diameter of the PVC pipe that you used? Are the engravings very deep? How much material must be removed from the pipe thickness in order for light to be visible through the engraving?

Doorknob, the pvc pipe i used here is 50mm diameter with a wall thickness of 3mm. i think from memory the cut depth was about 1mm.
the light will shine through the pipe no problems, the cut depth just determines how much light is needed to properly illuminate the litho.
I also have some 80mm diameter stormwater pipe i want to try out, its a lot thinner walled at 1.5mm so cut depth would probably only need to 0.5mm or so.

oh and heres a couple more pics i found.
A scaled down Telecaster, my first attempt at 2 sided machining on the neck ( can probably see where i didn't set safe z high enough and ploughed thru the neck haha )


and in the spirit of christmas, wifey decorated it after i cut it out.

Hi all back again with another creation.
Made another litho, this time on a flat piece of cast acrylic and drew up a frame/ lightbox for it.
Found the frame pattern on google, then vectorized it in v-carve.
Stained the 16mm mdf prior to carving.
The litho is a perfect press fit into the rebate in the frame, had to do some light sanding of the litho edges for the perfect fit but didn't take much
Lit up with led strip light stuck around the inside of the light box area and added a few slots to the back cover for ventilation.

Still at it, More stuff!

Picked up a bunch of 6061 ally scrap from boat builders and had a play with 2 sided machining again.
This one is from 1" 6061 scrap piece.
Milled the block to 90x90mm with holes in the corners to match my baseplate hold down holes so when i flipped the peice and screw it back down it will be in the right place.
Did the v-carving first with a 22mm 90 degree v bit, wasn't sure how well it would work but it worked very well.
I nearly got it right, i missed by about 0.2mm as you might be able to see, next time i'll set up a fence to more accurately position the stock.
Some horrible tool marks on the outside surface of the bottom piece, i suspect it was from ramping the plunges and the bit chattering also cheap chinese end mill too.
Not bad for a test tho


Fits together quite well, not sue what I'll use it for yet maybe a little grease pot or something like that

Back again!
More aluminium v-carving, this time just a couple of small keyring size items.
Still using my chinese 90 degree vee bit, working very well.
0.2mm DOC with 0.1mm stepover at 21000rpm and 1300mm/min
This time i spray painted them, let them dry then finely sanded off the high points to leave the paint in the v-carving.
