Setting up motor speed and all

I have been playing around with some settings but I think at this point I am working blindly and before I do something very wrong I figured its time I ask for help.

I have stepper motor and lead screw (1/4" - 20tpi) directly connected.

I am using stepper motors from Lin Engineering 4218L-01-10 and I am using a TB6560 driver board I ordered from China.

I am not sure anymore on which values I should have in the Motor Turning section, under "Steps per" at one point I had 7600 which made the X axis move one inch but setting the Y axis with the exact same values caused the Y axis stepper to hiss and barely move.

Then I started looking at the driver board switches and I have these values available (bold set by default)

    Current setting: 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%
Decay Mode Setting: Fast, 25%, 50%, Slow
    MicroStep Settings: 1, 1/2, 1/8, 1/16

I tried setting MicroStep to 1/8 and then 1/16 but the motors became very slow.

Also I am using a GLD150-24 Power supply.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Mike

Set the microstep to 1/8, and the steps/unit to 32,000.

Set the accel to 5, and slowly increase the velocity. Use the up and down across on the keyboard while in Motor Tuning to test. When it starts to stall, back off the velocity 20%. Then start increasing the accel.

I don't know anything about the other settings on your drive.

    Thanks for the response Gerry,
I set MicroStep to 1/8, I set Accel to 5 and going from 0 to 33 velocity I got from nothing to fastest. setting velocity from 34 it starts slowing down the motor as i raise the value but does not really stalls.
When I have 33 set the axis travels about half inch for a reading of 1 unit (I reset X to 0 and then I typed x-1 in MDI input. If I bring back the motor to 0 and then I type x-2, it travels about 1 inch and it takes about 10 seconds.

Does this sound ok? Have I reached maximum speed?
It was faster before, I guess setting to 1/8 is probably 4 times slower than 1/2?

Did you set the steps/unit to 32,000?

If it's not moving the right distance, then you have your microstep setting wrong on the drives. Are you sure they're not set to 1/4 step?

It was faster before, I guess setting to 1/8 is probably 4 times slower than 1/2?
No, same speed, but needs 4 times as many steps to achieve the same speed.

Try changing your Kernel Speed from 35Khz to 25Khz.

25Khz is good for up to 46ipm, and might run better. However, 33ipm is 660 rpm, and may be the most you'll be able to get from that drive.

    I don't have 1/4 in the options.
    So I tried all options.
    Having 32,000 / Velocity 24 / Accel 1.5
    Testing the X axis
Setting Microstep to 1, the travel is 8 inches
Setting Microstep to 1/2, the travel is 4 inches
Setting Microstep to 1/8, the travel is 1/2 inches
Setting Microstep to 1/16, the travel is 1 inch

So I've set all axis to 1/16 and x axis is doing very well however the Y axis is traveling 1.25 inches and the Z axis is doing 1.5 Inch (Y and Z did not work at Velocity 24, I had to bring them both to 9 to get them to stop jamming!

I have gone over everything (that I know of) and I have set the switch settings exactly the same for all 3 axis.
X axis working well, Steps per=32000, Velocity=24 Acceleration=1.5 and it is traveling 1 inch as it should when I type X1 in MDI

Y and Z behave differently, fastest velocity is 9 and both traveling 1.5 Inch (and not smoothly)

I ruled out motors and wire connections by plugging in Y and Z motors to X axis and both are working well there. It seams like my issue is from my China driver.

    Anything else I can try?

    I found the problem!
Well I didn't really find the problem but I resolved my issue so if anyone run into the same thing, I reduced the voltage from 24 Volts to 12 volts and I have now all 3 axis running at identical speed.

I still have a small issue and it is for 1 unit the travel distance is about 7/8 of an inch so I guess I can play with the steps per=32000 +/- ?
Or is there a better way to fine tune?
