    3 axis mill retrofit

    Hello
I have a 3 axis machine with a junk anillam control. It has 3 SEM mt30m4-59 servo motors. http://www.sem.co.uk/files/brochure/MT30M4.pdf.

I called Gecko and they said they didn't have anything that could drive these motors to the full capacity. Does anybody know an affordable solution? My power supply is 115VDC.

I plan on using a CNC4PC c11 BOB and mach 3 to control this system.

    Help is appreciated!

    Brandon

    http://www.larkencnc.com/viper/v200.htmThanks! found it http://www.larkencnc.com/viper/v200.htm

Question: My motors have a 9.5v per 1000rpm tach. Can I use linear glass scales for position feedback and eliminate the tach?

No you must replace the tac with encoders on the motrors or the machine will "hunt" and tear up the ball screws.

I'm no expert on Rutex but I haven't seen any posts by people running rutex drives. I have Viper 200 drives on my Bport mill and running good in the testing stage still working on the retrofit.

I hear they are not as stout as they claim they are either. I plan to use the larkin drives as well on my boss retrofit (servo machine)

purchased viper 200's and us digital 500cpr encoders. Talked to Larry at Larken and he told me to use a Breakout board that is not opto-isolated becase the drives are opto-isolated. He said it could hurt the timing on your setup. Can anybody elaborate on this?

I have heard the same thing about doubling up on opto's , The latest bob campbell combo breakout board ver 5 is not opto'ed on the step and dir. outputs .
The description on his site is of ver2 and say's it is opto'ed but the site is behind the times ,the boards that he is shipping is ver 5 and is not, he says he is going to update the site.

I have a couple of the cnc4pc boards but i am not sure what version they are, but they are only opto-isolated on the inputs, the outputs are just buffered .

You may have a different version!!

Can you let us know how this turned out? I have the same servo motors and am trying to do the same conversion. Any part numbers for encoders or pictures would be appreciated! Thanks.
