cnc screwcutting???

Hi All,
Have just started collecting bits to cnc my taig /peatol here in the UK lathe,I would very much like to include cnc screw cutting and read in the mach2/3 manual that you need a encoder,I now very little about this only that there is a disc spinning round with a slot in it and the encoder bolts on and reads the spindle speed by how many times the slot goes by the encoder I think ,have looked at encoders on the R.S components site but don't know, if am looking at the right ones if someone could point them out for me that would be very helpful, also were does the encoder link up to mach2/3 thorough one of the pins?,is there something in-between the encoder and mach2 i.e a circuit board,if so were can I get one from in the uk?.
Many Thanks
Regards Steve.

Sorry THINK i HAVE POSTED THIS IN THE WRONG PLACE BUT DON'T KNOW HOW THE MOVE IT

Either RS or Farnel sell the encoders. You just use a resistor and plug the output straight into the parallel port. Mach will read this input to determinethe correct feed speed for you. Unfortunately I don'tknowthe exact part number fo the encoder, but I know of someonewho may be able to help. Hopefully Bloy will be along shortly!

Many thanks Kong,
I did see some encoders on the RS site but they have so many don't know witch one to go for also is there any chance of a sketch of the set-up what goes were,size/type of resister etc.

Check out Bloys thread here - shoptask 3/1 lathe/mill assembly and mods
He uses the encoder you are looking for.

Goto post number 64 for some info.

Hi Steve,
I've looked up the opto sensor part number that I used for the index of the lathe spindle.
Note....it is of the reflector type where instead of a slotted disc, it uses a piece of white tape on the rotating pulley hub mounted on the spindle.

here is the part number:

From Mouser, the company
4 pin Omron Sensors - Non-Amplified 653-EE-SB5V
I also got the 4 pin connector 653-EE-1001 (makes it easier to connect up.
You will also need to add a small resistor to the LED to limit the current...I think I used a 280kohm 1/4 watt.

In general, everyone seems to have a prefered setup....
If you need more info or assistance, send me notification.

John (Bloy)

Many Thanks John,
Here,s the one's I have been looking at,don't know if it will do the job or what one or what one to go for RS Stock no: 301-8442 ,RS Stock no: 303-1192 ,RS Stock no: 455-8020 ,so do these not need a PCI encoder interface card if not how do you wire it all up to the resister etc. if it has 4 legs/prongs what wire goes to what resister,to?,encoder to mach2,sorry for my lack of knowledge , am ok on the machine side of things ex toolmaker but know bugger all about the rest.
Regards Steve

I should have kept better records... I know I have the diagram buried somewhere in this computer... Soon it will be found and some idea of how it was hooked up can be conveyed...might be a while though...

Thanks John,
Do you think them RS one's will do the trick.
Some more bits for my shopping list, keep getting bits drop through my letter box with funny looks from the wife, tell her she can't look as there bits for her birthday, think she is in for a bit of a shock when I hand her a bunch of flowers on her birthday .
Regards Steve.

Hi All,
Just re-picked up on my lathe project after a long time, all done except for the screw cutting, does any one have a wiring diagram on how to wire the encoder into mach3 as its something I know nothing about and also if the RS encoders mentioned in my earlier post will do the job.

Many Thanks
Steve.

Hi All

Hope this in the right space.....

I'm converting a Okuma LS10 to use Mach3.

I'm set and ready to go, accept spindle decoding. On my Okuma there is a decent 1024 encoder (the 12 V ones). I read that I only should use the C, and disregard the A & B channels?

I would also like to ask I'm planning to use Mastercam X for my G-code generation, which have all the canned cycles. I don't have a variable spindle speed (for now!!!!), but 12 speeds selected via a gearbox. Question if I choose 220 rpm e.g. would Mach itself control the z and x axes speed and position, I hope and reckon so, but need to ask to make sure.?

Last question, is left hand thread a mission? Can't really find anything on LH in MCX nor Macj3, so I think I'm just stupid, I know you can reverse direction and play with the Z axes starts and finish, but is that the right way or should I say the left way.

Looking forward to your replies and thanks for taking the time to reply.

Regards

RuanB
