It doesn't calculate anything. All Mach3 does is display the encoders position.
Before I waste countless hours making adapters to mount encoders on my stepping motors does anyone know if the Mach 3 takes into consideration the backlash of an axis when calculating the distance travelled by the encoder? Thank you.

so mach 3 directly displays the position of the encoder? So if this is the case then it would not take into consideration backlash correct?

Correct, it will only display the encoders actual position.
