    Exclamation Can a AC Analog Servo drive be in MACH-3 control?


    Hi friends,
    We are CNC machine builders from Chennai, India. We are planning to build CNC machines using MACH-3 software control. Can a "AC Analog Servo motor and drive" be used with this MACH-3 control software? Please somebody give me a proper solution for this query.

    Hi,
    Short answer - yes, it's doable.

    The type of motor doesn't matter, it's the drive and/or amplifier that dictates HOW you interface it to Mach3. I have put together a page showing a couple of different ways (there are more options available) to interface various types of drives to Mach3, here.

    There are many ways to do this with different add on boards, the thread below is a step & dir to plus/minus 10v output, these boards are very well made, if your drives support position control then you can run the Mach step & dir straight to the drive through a breakout board, you are limited to the pulse rate then as to how fast you want to run your machines,

    I'm doing a AC servo to Mach right now & will do a post on it when time permits, Look at DMM Technolgy, this is a very cool system/package

    Hi friends,
    Can anybody suggest me which of the following pack would be better in performance and of low cost?? AC Analog servo drive and motor or AC digital servo drive and motor?? what would be the difference in using AC and DC drive/motor?

    Geez, do you even read the replies you get?
    YES - drives controled by an analog signal CAN be interface to Mach3 but you need one of two things:

    1) An external step- and direction to analog interface which closes the position loop between the encoder and the drives analog command and takes positioning commands in form of step and direction signals from Mach3. These step and direction signals can come from Mach3's own LPT-port driver OR using an external "pulse engine" such as the Smoothstepper. (The YAPSC:10V is such a converter)

    OR

    2) An external motion controler taking preplanned motion trajectories from Mach3. Several such units exists for example Galil, DSPMC and KFlop+KAnalog. These interface to Mach3 in different ways, it may be USB, TCP/IP , USB, or a PCI/ISA card etc.

    Again, the type of motor doesn't matter and Mach3 couldn't care less if you're using a stepmotor, DC-servo, AC-servo or whatever. It's all about the drives control-signals, if the drive accepts step- and direction you can drive it "directly" with the LPT-port. If the drives accepts analog command signal you need to use one of the above option. Again, have a look at the web-site I linked to previosuly, it covers several different scenarios.
