Get 8.04 from linuxcnc.org
http://www.linuxcnc.org/content/view/2/4/lang,en/

Installing the special emc disk is usually straight forward. Installing pycam is a bit less straight forward but several of us have done it. Let's see how the emc-ubuntu install goes first.

Unless you have a lot more linux experience than you're letting on, installing emc on 9.anything will end in frustration.

edit/ OH ! Do yo just want to run emc in simulator mode ? That's much easier. The info is on the linuxcnc.org wiki.

From my understanding

EMC2- 2.3 is for Hardy Heron 8.0.4 or 6.0 (tumbling toad or something ;-) and is not built to work with later releases like 9. la dee dah

Drop the 9..... and burn the ISO Linux/EMC2 install from the LINUXCNC site.

That works, and I am no expert.

First off, especially for linux dummies like you and me, You should use the "Live CD" option available on Linuxcnc.org.

The liveCD's have either Ubuntu 6.06 OR 8.04 versions. Why use these "older" distros? Well - for one, they are LTS (Long Term Support) versions and will be maintained for a number of years. There is no gaurantee that 9.04 will be supported after 18 months whereas the other two will be supported for 5 years (i believe thats the length).

Secondly, installing EMC2 on other versions of linux can and is done by others, but that path requires you to be a Linux Journeyman. It is not for novices (let alone dummies) even though its still a "Ubuntu" distrubution.

My recommendation to you is this. Use ubuntu 9.04 to download and burn a LiveCD from:
http://www.linuxcnc.org/content/view/21/4/lang,en/

Once you have a burned ISO of 8.04, boot that CD up and run EMC directly off the CD for a quick test run. Then install the 8.04 version directly from the LIVECD.

Once installed, you will need to do updates, but if you get that far, you are no longer a Dumby but advancing towards "Novice" status.

Good luck

Just a side note,

Wireless on the Realtime Kernel (which is required to do machine control) may result in wireless issues. I was never able to get my Wireless G modem running. Most guys on IRC simply spend the money on +100' of ethernet cable to hardwire thier shop.

Ditto on wireless, but you can also do an Access Point to convert your "wired" Linux box to wireless. That way the Linux box thinks it's a wired connection.

As far as loading pycam...does anybody have valid experience? essentially if you have done it before like ubuntu 8.04 and pycam any helpfull hints would be great.

I will move to the EMC2 friendly version of UBUNTU tomorrow night (physics and calcII exam tomorrow AM)

I have mach3 loaded on xp for this dual boot system and a four-axis minitech on the way in (monday infact)

I am going into the third year of mechanical engineering at UMS&T and would like to make this a "kernel" of my study...(manufacturing and product development using opensource)

curently I am doing a class on python programming so that mystery should clear up over the next few months....(experience with C++, and PERL in another life)

With MACH3 and visual mill on one system and PYCAM and EMC2 on the other I will be able to compare and contrast.

My job should pay the bills....hopefully >_<

Anyway your input is appreciated

I installed Pycam on an older box successfully ONLY after getting help from Dan Falck on the #CAM IRC chat on Freenode.org

There are several hoops you have to jump through due to TOGL dependencies (Danger Linux Novices).

Either way, you should log into that chat and talk with some of the guys there. THere apparently is alot of development occurring on HeeksCAD HeeksCAM (partially in python I believe) both are open source for linux.

We're definitely in Dan's backyard now, for either python or cam Maybe he'll check in here and explain how to do this properly.

In the meantime here's a quick and dirty. It might have an issue or 2 as I have not used pycam in any real way.

>>Using the Synaptic package manager, install python-opengl
>>Downloadt the Togl linux i386 tar.gz (not the src) from here:
http://togl.sourceforge.net/
>>Extract it on your desktop (using right click) then......
>>
Code:
  sudo cp -R Desktop/Togl2.0-8.4-Linux/lib/Togl2.0/ /usr/share/tcltk/tcl8.4/
>> start pycam from a terminal
Code:
 python path/to/pycam.py
example:
python pycam-0.1.7b/pycam.py

>>Now teach me how to use it

Honestly I'm more interested in HeeksCAD/CNC at this point.

oops, that link wasn't right. should have been
http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...p?group_id=519

or, if you have 8.04 networked, use the terminal
Code:
 cd Desktop; wget http://downloads.sourceforge.net/togl/Togl2.0-8.4-Linux.tar.gz
