is a dedicated video card essential?

i've bought a cheap IBM p4 to run emc, and it does, even with a intergrated video card.
i then read after it not working on my first attempt that you need a dedicated video card. but do you really when it works without.

i am asking because i also bought a pci card(fx5200) that will not work(won't load ubuntu). and i would like to know if i should take it back or find a driver.

Do a latency test. If the latency is low enough for what you want to do and has no periodic long spikes with onboard video then onboard is fine.

Try googling - installing Ubuntu video drivers - etc. The ubuntu community will have much more info on changing video drivers. I have done it but don't feel really qualified to give instructions. In ubuntu 6.04 and 8.04 You end up having to edit etc/X11/ xorg.conf , which means you need uses the sudo command to edit it....

get a cheap video card from a local computer store for 10-20 bucks.

Word of caution - Do not assume its the video outright.

There could be other issues at work.

First off - determine which motherboard you have

Next - look at the listing of computer mobo's on the emc site to determine if its a problem machine.

In the bios - start out with everything at default. Check latency
Good Latency i - move to software setup
Bad latency - Start disabling APCI/APM features - anthing to do with power management

    Retest Latency
    Good Latency - software setup
Bad latency - Check if chip has SMI issues - if so - make corrections and retest

    Retest Latency
    Good Latency - software setup
Bad latency - Check Video setup (Intel 810 video has issues) - drop in a cheap video card and select a VESA or generic driver

    Retest Latency
    Good latency - Software setup
Bad Latency - no your options with the MOBO are getting smaller - others here may have additional info

Please note above that aside from your initial purchase, no added costs are needed for the first four items, you do not spend any money aside from your time researching and trying things out.

    Good Luck

The answer to your question really depends on the implementation of the on board video. I have two computers out in the shop, both of which have on board video. One of them works fine, the other I had to add an ATI Rage 128Pro 32mb pci video card to fix the latency. My computer that works with on board video has the Intel 810 video.

If you look at the list of motherboards that are listed on the wiki, at least one of them has been used successfully with its on board video. So as someone else said test your board's latency and see if a separate video is needed.

What next? If you've got stable latency of 8000 - that's a winner in my book. Get the machine running and make some chips
