So I have a dell optiplex gx270 that works great when it works. I believe it has the problem of the bad capacitor. I could be half way through a project and the computer sorta shuts off. Mill stops and looses its place. I cant be to mad because I got it for free. Now I wont lie I am a computer idiot so I have a question. What do you guys think of this computer for soley for the mill. I know I have to come up with a way to load EMC onto but I dont think that will be to hard I just have to make a usb boot disk. Well let me know what you guys think. http://www.compusa.com/applications/...815&CatId=2635 |

Hi: I think it would work just fine and no problem getting emc to run on it. Just download Ubntu with the emc and do a dual boot system, the Ubuntu setup will set the grub boot set up for you automaticly. All you have to do is generate the CD from the download. If you go this route you will not regret it. (software wise that is) budP

The Dell 270's and 280's have a know problem with motherboard capacitors. If you open the case look at the capacitors and see if any have domed tops…(not good). Also does the fan seem to run away at times, sign of poor fan processor contact? If it’s just the OS locking up then going to Ubuntu will clear that problem up, but now you have to learn how to get around in Linux, not hard just different. Jay

BudP thanks for the reply, I already have the Ubuntu Disk it just the new computer doesnt have a optical drive, but after reading a little last night I might be able to take the optical drive out of the gx270 for just the install on the shuttle. sandefuj. I honestly don't know what is exactly happening. This is the first time anything like this has happened to me with a computer. It doesn't power down but the screen will go blank "black" and will not allow you to do anything. Almost like a un-recoverable hibernation. It does this at random times, usually half way threw a project or just after I finish the last touch off. I think I am going to go ahead and order it. It does say a 30 day money back guarentee to I guess I will give it a try. Unless someone says something bad about it in the next few days.

I ended up getting the computer from Newegg.com I tried making a usb boot disk but that is just over my head. I opened it up and hooked up the old cd rom drive to the same looking connections. It worked great. Installed in less than 4 minutes. Performed the latency test and came out with numbers at 10,270 so by the user manual standards I have a excellent candidate. Ran a file that usually takes a hour and half to complete with no problems. Its amazing how little things can make the experience so much more enjoyable. I should also mention that this Shuttle Case is really nice. Just the construction and the way things are placed just look proffesional, easy and organized. I am doing most of this comparing to the old GX270 which looked like an abortion gone wrong. Less than 200 shipped to the door in less than 3 days. I would recommend this to anyone, great buy so far.

Glad to hear your doing better. My computer guy who I call on when I have major issues always tells me to stay away from Dell, he hates them. I kinda thought it was a Ford vs. Chevy thing, preference basically, but I eventually realized that Dell is just not up to par.
