    5-axis control for Senior Project

    Hello All,

I and two other fellow students are working on our Mechanical engineering senior project at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. We are designing and building a small trunnion table to retrofit a 3 axis benchtop cnc mill to five axis.
At this point the design is complete and parts are being manufactured, so we are starting to think more about the actual control.

I have a lot of experience with Mach already, but Mach seems to have had very limited development in the five axis area.

My first question is whether or not EMC2 would be able to perform five axis simultaneous machining with a trunnion table configuration?

Also what are the current limitations (if any) EMC2 in the five axis machining realm?

    Thanks,

    Daniel

This might be a question best answered by the developers. A couple of them are actively working on 5 axis although the design of the test machine is different than your project. You probably have already spotted samco's 5 axis thread on this forum.

The surest way to get the attention of all the developers is through one of the contact methods listed at linuxcnc.org.
Anyone who says "It only goes together one way" has no imagination.

Let me see if my intuition is working correctly...your father is Markus Menig? Of MDA Precision? And this is the Wabeco retrofit he is ecstatic about?

Have you posted to the emc users list yet?
Yes, EMC2 will do your tilting rotary table.
You may have to do some kinematics programming.
It will be very simple and fun.
