Hi I am trying to set up EMC via the Ubuntu Live install cd, but I am trying to install to a usb key, I am trying this to achieve a solid state hard drive set up. I get 98% through the install but as soon as it starts to install the grub bootloader the install fails with the message that the bootloader can't be installed. Has anyone got any thought on what I should try next??? Regards Andrew |

I have used a compact flash as a hard drive and it works great. You just need the adapter which you can pick up for $6 then you attach that to the IDE cable as a master and install away. The system sees the CF card as a regular hard drive. This solution makes for a very quiet system.

txcowdog, Fantastic idea. I had been thinking about doing something similar myself. Can you point me in the direction of the $6 adaptor you mentioned. Are there any specific procedures you need to go through when installing (i.e. partitioning, etc) or is it just as straightforward as an install to HDD. Cheers, Neil

Hi, Thanks for the reply guys. I was originally thinking of using compact flash instead of USB, but I had an 8Gig usb stick handy. I know Centroid/Ajax use a compact flash on their Linux based controls. I am a little concerned with the number of read/writes I can get out of either a CF or a USB device, Any thoughts????? Thanks again Andrew

This is where I bought mine: http://www.buyextras.com/syhiquidetoc1.html You just plug into the IDE cable and treat it as any other hard drive. My CF was set up from the factory as FAT16 so I deleted the partition, set up a new partition using FAT32 and reformatted. This gave me a little savings on storage by taking advantage of the smaller sector offered by FAT32.
