Emc2 problems

I have been trying to run parts from emc2. I am not having any luck with it repeating. I am running a 2ghz, 512mb ram computer. Just to give you some insight I can make one part right after setting the axis up. Then it will gain or lose position. I have used an indicator to set backlash. Anyone else have problems like this. Any ideas would be great.

I wish I could help, but I'm not even ready to start machining yet. If you don't get an answer here, you might try this url to the EMC irc.

Good luck,

I have not used EMC2 but EMC worked fine for me.

hi, could you post a bit more info about your setup? are you using steppers or servos? how are you interfacing to the pc, parallel port or motion control card? what encoder resolution are u using? etc

setup

I am running stepper motors at half step. I am interfacing this setup with a parallel port. It seems that the software gets mixed up at the end of running the program. I am using a m02 at the end of the short program. It seems to have something to do with backlash or work offsets. I have set the machine up with 0 work offset. This did not work. I have checked backlash and it seems right. Any ideas?

Do you get the problem on every axis, or just one?

Is your g-code manually written, or generated from cad? You might want to write a really simple g-code file, like moving the spindle up and down, and see if that causes the same error. (run it unpowered and mount an indicator on the mill, that way it will be easy to spot.

setup

The code was hand writen as it is only about 12 lines. Also it is a lathe not a mill.

How much backlash is in your machine
Does the error in consecutive parts appear incremental or random
As daedalus said, you could try running dry and check the machine is returning to a known (indicator) position before m2
