EMC and soundcard on HP nootebook

I tryed installing EMC on a old HP notebook that I had using the script for ubuntu ver 6.06 installs ok then on reboot there was just a strange ticking noise and nothing could connect to the Xserver the install so nothing worked after login, kinda wierd becouse login uses Xserver. It looked like the install broke some of the links that giv the desktop premision to get going. I tryed ubuntu 5.10 and its install script for EMC it worked ... however .... its still going tick, tick, tick about 3 times a second this is played back through the sound card (at first I thought the fan had broke). So now to the question dose EMC2 is this normal some kind of heartbeet or is it a conflict with the sound card? It tends to change frequncy geting slower with hevy cpu loading and speeding up when AXIS is started. Both versions of ubntu woork fine without EMC on the same notebook.

the realtime kernels do not have ACPI support which can create problems.

either disable sound from the BIOS, or don't load the sound driver at bootup.

there are some instructions at

Thanks Andy55 I was thinking it was the ALASA?? drivers but had'nt made any progress beacous the mixer will work but when I sent of tryed to read from the soundcard it would try then error out APCI not working makes more sence than just the sound card drivers. Some of the APM stuff semes to have broke to on looking at the link you gave that makes sence as well APM is setup some what by APCI. Is it possable to build a realtime cernal with APCI in it as well or do they step on each others toes? Untel then turning off the sound will at least keep it from ticking all the time and let me get it back to the latest version. Maby a cheap USB sound card or usng my windoze box for somthing to listen to besides the steppers.

It's probably possible to make a kernel with some ACPI compiled in but I don't know anything about that...

I just accept that the RT kernel does not have sound. When booting to WinXP I get sound as normal, and it's also possible to configure the non-realtime Ubuntu kernel to have sound drivers if you want sound under Linux.

But I guess listening to mp3's when milling with emc is out of the question without a special kernel...

I tried out the "nosound" file on Ubuntu 6.06 lsat night and, it worked . I do miss APM and soud but my linux skils are not up to bulding a kernal just yet, probly by the time they are someone else will have done it as ACPI is used more and more. Untell then I will just use my doze box for MP3s

Thanks for the tip
