I bought a 24" X 24" enclosure for the machine. Hoping to do something like this drawing.

    Question

Is there a way to make a somewhat conversational interface with LinuxCNC?

I am planning on setting a zero against the shoulder of the part and pressing cycle start to prompt "SET Z AXIS STROKE" AND "SET FEED IN IPM". After entering the data, I want the table to reciprocate from zero to the stroke distance repeatedly. Then maybe have an interrupt button to back the grinding wheel out for checking size or changing parts.

Could some one lead me in the right direction for this?

Here's one of the front plates for the soon to be panel. I plan to clean this up and have it flash chromed. I'm going to paint the enclosure black.

    Al,
I did not know what a lamacoid was until I just googled it. I already have the plates made and ready for plating but I will look into lamacoids next time. Know of any good suppliers?

    Smile Video

Here is a video of the machine grinding a 5° angle on the inside of a grinding wheel hub/mount we are making. Sorry it's a little shaky.

This is possible, but I wouldn't claim that it is easy.
You could write a new UI in Glade, and interface that directly with your existing HAL. In this scenario you wouldn't have any need for the Axis UI, or the G-code interpreter. You might even be able to do away with the motion module.
I know of one chap who has done this for a cutter sharpening machine.

If this sounds like more of a challenge than you fancy, then you could look at using ngcgui
    NGCGUI

Or possibly something similar to my lathe config.

    svenakela - Thanks!

Andy - Thanks for the info. I may give the NGCGUI a shot. I am still fairly new to linux but I would love to learn more.

I have tried many times to post to the mailing list and it never shows up or gets responded to. I would like to join....Is there anyway to get around the spam filter?

I have a guy that specializes in Panels, but a local sign engraver should be able to fit you up.
Mine takes DXF or DWG so this is handy.

Actually, JT just created this tutorial on creating a GUI for LinuxCNC from scratch:
Creating a GUI - LinuxCNC Support Forum
contains lots of links and discussion, the tutorial link in the first post might be worth reading.

Are you using Gmail? If so, have a look at
New User Registration - LinuxCNC Support Forum
Though I am not sure that the same applies to the mailing list.
Otherwise, send me a private message with your email address and I will try to get you subscribed.
