Can anyone recommend a high-power, inexpensive controller?

I know a fellow who'd like to convert his Bridgeport to CNC, and EMC looks like a great way to do it. However, he's on a bit of a budget, and needs a powerful stepper driver for a reasonable price. Can anyone recommend a kit for a high-power stepper driver that doesn't cost too much? I'm not shy of a soldering iron, and am open to the idea of making some PCBs and assembling the components myself if that's the way to go.

Hard to beat the Parker S6/ S8 stepper drives. Ebay has a listing now (or did) for 5 units for $250, $50 per drive, and they take step and direction. Just plug 'em into an outlet ;-)

Emc2 will control them just fine ;-)
