I'm looking to find a similar product like the one shown. It is a self reversing screw. I want to do a experiment, but the cost for one of these is $$$$ and I'm not sure if my experiment will even work. Anyone can help a student would be appreciated! Thanks http://www.acmescrew.eu/s/Self+reversing+screws/1/8/ |

| You might want to check out some old tool dealers or antique joints. Before powered screw drivers there were manual screwdrivers that used those reversing threads. The operator pushed on the handle (down in a vertical application), the thrust was converted to rotary motion by the reversing thread. I think "Stanley" made them. It pays to be an old fart.LOL Dick Z

| Ah yes, the 'pump screwdriver' IIRC it had a three position slide switch for fwd-rev & lock. I wish I had hung on to mine. ![]() They were a favourite on assembly lines. We also called them Yankee screwdrivers, for some reason? Al.

| There you go. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=370305344992, evidentally they are still popular in UK. You could also look at rolling-ring with reverse, but that may put the price out of reach. http://www.okcoil.com/ Al.

| thebaconbits, I don't know what size you want. For smaller units consider bait casting reel "level wind" line guides. Some of those salt water big game fish reels are fairly good sized. There might be some device like that for cable drums etc. Dick Z

| Well I spoke to a rep regarding the rolling ring type, but they said it would not work for my application. I'm trying to let out 3000 feet of line as a free spool and then use electric motor to reel the line back in. Something along the lines of 3/4 inch shaft to 1 inch shaft. The self reversing screw cost $1100.00 just for the screw and the follower and is way out of my price range. I'm currently looking into the fishing type rewind mechanisms. Trouble is finding a big one. Thanks for the help!! |

Al, The Yankee name came from Stanley Tools. You can still get them at: http://www.garrettwade.com/yankee-st...ks/p/08C02.02/ Best regards Bruno Last edited by brunog; 01-05-2010 at 08:55 AM. Reason: added info |

| Another option might be to use a second motor and an acme screw to drive your follower. Then use a microswitch at either end of the travel to reverse the motor. Mechanically this is probably the simplest and cheapest solution. |
