I recall the early 5 1/4" floppy drives used stepper motors for head positioning with a metal ribbon assembly. They had an aluminum drum attached to the stepper with a split metal ribbon wrapped around it whose ends were attached to the head assembly. It seems to me that a slightly upscaled system using larger metal strap and a larger drum (perhaps banding material) might be workable. One might even be able to incroperate the drive motor into the drum in some manner. Steve |

| There are some sytems like this out there, this is one http://www.stegmann.com/product/linear/index.html If that is what you had in mind. I used some on a hydraulic cylinder positioning application that worked out well. Al.
