Ballscrew from Ebay, what to check first ?

Ok, I just received one of the screws, 16mm diam., 5mm lead.

Seems in good order, nut moves very smooth and firm.
However from place to place to nut encounters something that feel like more resistance -is it dirt ? When I rotate the nut the other way just after passing those places it rotates smoothly backwards.

The screw was not "clinically" clean. It had very small fibers from packing and probably from clothes on it.
How should that kind of dirt feel like when moving the nut over it ?
Is it really bad, or just some proper cleaning and lubing will make it move more nicely?

Thanks,
Florin

Try giving it a good clean, I run duck oil through when they are dirty (slightest particle feels like a rock on a ballscrew) I also enjoy the savage amusement of stripping and cleaning ballnuts

Thanks Kipper,
my first feeling is that it is just dirt, but I don't have any previous experience with ballscrews, so I get pretty concerned about everything.
It is easy to slide the nut over those places, it doesn't take force, just 2 fingers on the nut rotating it a bit more firmly. But I wish it was totally smooth from end to end

I was playing with a 10mm one a couple of weeks back, letting it slide up and down by tilting the screw....those balls take some finding with old eyes

Wow !!

You mean the nut should slide down if I hold it vertically ? Because it doesn't !

Is it a single nut without preload? if it is it will but if it's zero backlash...maybe it will have some resistance. In service the one I was playing with is greased and tightens up quite an amount. Yours is probably greased?

There are grease marks on it (like oily stuff), but it doesn't have a grease nipple, just some holes.

Also I cant get to find the manufacturer, it has the following written on the nut:

XSIRO1605T30-07
080114883

single nut flange type

EDIT: one of the holes in the flange seems to be there for a grease nipple, but it had none...delivered.

Are these the screws and nuts from China? I'm thinking of buying some soon. What's the consensus so far? How many people have tried them?
I was thinking of a package deal including screws and rails as the shipping is low. The killer is the price of the bearing supports for the screws, anyone have a good source for those?

Try www.slidesandballscrews.com, they have them, and i think they are the cheapest in the UK.
They also have the machined ball screws.

Yup, those look just like the ones from China. Being on the west coast of Canada, though, the price is too high coming from Britain. Exchange rate is awful and shipping worse.
Is there a North American supplier for these?

They are daftly cheap - £70 for 1m of 16x5 screw and a single nut!
Alright, C7 tolerance ain't the best but is fine for most applications
