I am building a 5' x 40' CNC router based on Rack and Pinion system. I like to have speed of 600+ IPM and the materials I am cutting is soft foam. The gantry car is around 200 lbs. What type of motor should I use? I was thinking to use direct drive method so there is one less problem to deal with speed reduction system. Thanks McYoda  |

| Have a look at http://www.mechmate.com Free plans and lots of info on the forums. It uses either 7.2:1 or 1:1 steppers. I don't remember the speeds offhand, but it is fast. They've covered the rack and pinion drive pretty thouroughly. |
