On a manual/cnc, or teach lathe, im curious to know how is it possible for the saddle to be moved manually via the handle(rack and pinion), when a ballscrew also controls the saddle? wont the ballscrew and nut hold the saddle? Is the ballscrew fixed, and a rotable nut used? I know that the motors hold position in cnc mode, but in manual mode can a ballnut simply be pushed along the screw?

Are you sure the carriage handle isn't a manual pulse generator in disguise? Then the handle would cause motion via ballscrew.

That is true for some makes, but if you look at a haas TL 1,2,or3 it has a rack and pinion on the front.
