    linear scale interface with servo

    Hi
First post, have a question for those who know,I am building rifling machine want to know if I could drive twist with servo motor on carriage ,based on linear longitudinal scale telling it how fast to turn, pull carriage by hand as a an option, so I don't want ball screw ,would linear scale react fast enough?
also may want gain twist in controller, thanks for any help

I gather what you are looking for is a motor to position to an angular value base on the travel distance of a linear encoder, which is operated manually?
The motor requires to be geared to the linear scale.
A stand alone Galil controller would do this.
This is some animated examples which could be adapted to that application.
See the Food Slicer for the closest one, the linear ball screw motor would be replace by the scale.

    food slicer

I looked at link and essentially that is what i want,I have a carriage that runs on linear bearings that is driven by lead screw to drill and ream with variable freq motor and when i want to rifle i can split nut to disengage lead screw and pull carriage by hand,i want to take out drilling reaming cartridge replace with servo ,set twist rate on controller and move carriage back and forth with hand power on carriage ,has to have no lag back and forth to prevent cutter backing into previous cut, index and single point next groove, thanks
