Sorry noob hear, I have been reading this site for while gathering info. I am trying to build a 48" x 48" plasma table. I want to make the y axis like the Torchmate 3 table. I have access to a bunch a t-slot aluminum through my work. I want to use a linear slide like the 3 but I do not know what size or brand I am looking for? Is this even a good design? I don't want to spend a ton of money on just one axis. I was looking at a few sites and they wanted like 200$ for the bearing and like 600$ for a 60" rail. Does that sound right? |

| Check out www.automation4less.com for some cheaper rails.. I think that what the torchmate people are using is something like a single 30mm recirculating ball bearing type rail (AKA thk rail). A hiwin brand block will run ~$75.00 in this size and the rail another $150 or so for the ~52" you will need. My interpretation of what they are doing is from looking at the picture on their website--someone who has actually seen the machine might have a better idea about its construction. Nevertheless, my opinion of the design is that it is pretty simple and won't tax the rail in the slightest--in fact using a THK rail for a flame/plasma cutter is overkill because you will never see the accuracy(or forces) that the rail is capable of. It should also be pretty easy to build and last quite a while. If I were building this, the decision would probably come down to what I had around...if I already had the rail/block, I might build it this way, if not, I would probably go the gas pipe/ball bearing route (cheaper but more labor and less professional). I think that the t-slot aluminum you have access to will make a great frame. Good Luck and let us know how it turns out! |
