Regarding HP Laser Jet motors and similar such recycled motorrs Does anybody know what the pitch of the spur gear is on these motors? ![]() 14.5 and 20 seem to be the common for spurs & racks (McMaster-Carr seems so) and I was wondering if I could just drive a motor down the rack with the existing gear. Is there an easy way to find out ? Without buying a tool or rack? (This seemed more like a mechanical issue and less a "motor" one thats why I posted here) Thanks - and, Jim

| Jim, The gearing on the shaft of an HPLJ-II/III stepper motor is not straight, it is in a spiral. See attached picture. All of the spurs & racks on McMaster-Carr's website appear to have straight gearing. Maybe I was looking in the wrong section. Do you have any specific M-C part numbers? HayTay |

| HayTay -- Yer Right! I was looking at the wrong stepper (picture) and thinking it was an HP. Sooo, if I get to the HPs - then looks like its pull/adapt that gear and get the M-C gear and rack as a set. Still wonder about the other Epson etc (junk) motors and bits though. Maybe the easiest is to use the belts that came off the printers with them. Thanks for the quick comeback. Jim

| After Googling gears & such, I have discovered that the type of gearing on the shaft of an HPLJ-II/III stepper motor is known as a "Helical Gear". Check out the following links: Atlanta Drive Systems Qualty Transmission Components KHK Co., Ltd. Learned something new today, Thanks, HayTay |

| HayTay! Great sites - thanks. BUT - Now I still gonna have to figure out the pressure angle and helix angle on the HP motors. Oh yeah and Left/Right pitch. Maybe easier to pull and replace the gear. I'm sure you saw the app I was thinking of--the motorand gear right on the rack. I was googling down the wrong set of gears! Thanks again, and Jim

| in likelihood its 20, 14.5 is rather old fashioned but does come up sometimes. then again who knows what they put in them. Also, I bet a rack to match that gear, if you could find it, will not be cheap - was it actually driving a rack??? or just a matching helical gear? I'd be pulling the gear and replacing with standard rack and pinion edit. well i see on the link helical racks are stock, so maybe it wouldn't be that much more. be interesting to see the cost delta |
