I recently chanced upon a store selling surplus factory equopment and picked up what is supposedly a drive screw. Can someone please tell me what this is and how best to use it with steppers. It is 1/2" in diameter and has 8 threads running its length. The threads are quite steep that it looks like it only is 1 thread per inch. It came with a red anti-backlash nut that's spring loaded. Is this useable for home-builts? If so, can someone tell me what (how heavy)its capacity is and what size rails I can use? Thanks Check out the list of what's available Last edited by Guy Smiley; 12-11-2005 at 05:47 PM. |

| Sure looks like a bloke flogging his stuff until you re-read the start of the post. I was actually being nice by sharing a find. Sorry, ni pic available and am just hoping that the learned here can deduce from my description. Oh, and it has a black colored coating. |

| Is it like a acme style thread? The only ones that I can think of that would be that steep would be the ones like nook industries has. Is it a multiple start thread or a single and how long is it? It my be a good find depending on how you'd like to use it and if all else fails you can just beat your machine with it. ![]() Carl |

This has 8 threads running side by side which probably what makes the threads run real steep and the reason why I mentioned 1tpi. I guess this is what you've referred to as "start". Looking at the end of the screw, I did count 8. It's 48" long. Like I mentioned in my initial post, I chanced upon a store that sells surplus motion parts. And since I'm planning to build a few more machines for my own use I try to pick up parts when I find them. The reason why I immediately purchased this without full knowledge of what this is is because I don't want somebody to buy it before I do or me not having the cash when I finally need it. | I posted a list in my first post just wanting to share a find but somehow Mikie made it out to be inappropriate. I do understand somewhat because of the presence of all the advertisers here. I was thinking that diyers here that can't really afford expensive brand new stuff may find something they need in the list and i may be able to help them with it. I suggest that they purchase as a group to save on freight though as I'm in SE Asia. This is just in appreciation for all the help extended to me when I was building my machine and started from "0" knowledge on CNC. |

| Thank you for mentioning Nook Industries, it is very informative. I found that the above screw is a metric speed screw but seems to be custom because I don't find an 8 start in their catalog. I just need to understand now and do the math. Thanks Carl. |
