    Drive ratio question

Ok I am building a cnc laser table and im at the x axis setup but am stuck a little. Where Im at is i see guys and there builds go from a small tooth gear to a larger gear back to a smaller gear. This makes no sense to me as it sounds like there going big then back to the start. I am running a nema 23 270oz/in motor 1.8 degree 200 spr and I am looking for ideal speed needed for my cnc laser table. I am running a single motor with dual shafts to each side of my gantry. I will be using a 3/8" wide groove belt running along each side of my table (4x8) mind you. Does anyone have some formulas or good insight on this matter. All information is much appreciated guys.

    Thanks

You should know how fast you want the machine to go, and then choose your components to achieve that speed. That probably depends on what type of laser you'll be using, and what you'll be cutting.

Sorry Ambiguois It is Sunday nite the boys are probably sleepin.Being a wood burner I know little of lasers but the belt reduction you are looking at is probably 3/1.Are you using R&P?

No I am using a linear motion rail from Glacern and the pulley system will be belt driven.

The problem with belt drive fore the x axis is it is just too fast. You need high reduction 10/1 or more.If you have 1" pulleys 1RPM is 3" travel so 1000-RPM is 3,000IPM.It is costly to use belt drive as you may need gear reducers .Larger pulleys are even faster.Search the forums for belt drive

consider using a motor sizing program such as:

    MOTIONEERING® | Kollmorgen

it may take u an hour figuring it out but it will answer all ur sizing questions in the end and even help pick proper size motors (servo or stepper).
