What resolution is neccessary for a lathe?

Hi just wondered what resolution was required on a lathe ballscrew IE movement per step.

Right now I am going for .0004 per step. Will this give me a decent finish in both the X and Y direction. even on a taper?

    Thanks

I would personally like more resolution than that. Consider too that if taking a cut from the radius the diameter of the part will decrease by twice the depth of cut.

So that would give you 0.4 thou off the radius so becomes 0.8 thou off the diameter. I don't think that is a fine enough resolution for detail work like fitting bearings etc.

I was just thinking that yesterday so I am going to get a 2mm pitch screw for the X axis. That will have almost 10 times more resolution, which will mean something along the lines of 5X on Diameter. So closer to a tenth total. Then i can gear that down if need be.

    Thanks for the reply
