    How much pressure on rack and pinion

    I'm wondering what is the force for a good mesh contact and long lasting wear?

    Is there a chart for it? Does the number change if the face width is different?

    I am having problems with my cnc flame cutter, and i think the problem is that i am not pushing the pinion hard enough against the rack. I am going to install a air cylinder that pushes the pinion against the rack, this way i can increase the air ptessure to increase the pressure on the rack

    14-1/2" pressure angle is usually considered quieter operation, higher contact ratio and less backlash, the 20° has higher load carrying capacity.
    But there should be a method in place to make sure full mesh exists at all times.
    I have used the Rosta tensioners for the designs I have implemented.

    On my plasma table, I am using an air cylinder to push the the gear into the rack, and using an adjustable stop to keep it from trying to push the gear into the rack too hard. I was noticing on my old table that if I applied a lot of spring tension to the gear rack, I could accelerate well, but you would see a bit more saw tooth on the cuts. With less pressure the gear would jump out on hard acceleration. So I figured with the adjustable stop I could really push some pressure on it, keep it from jumping out and also resolve the saw tooth issue.

    What do you mean by saw tooth

    The rack isn't perfect flat so I wouldn't add a stop.

    I am planning on going air cyl route than rosta tensioner

    That's why I'm trying to find a force needed for it so I can adjust the regulator.

    I had some spare time today, and I cut off the old spring tensioner, and installed an air system on both sides of the x axis. It made a HUGH difference.

    Now to play with the air pressure and figure out how much pressure is enough.

    Was wondering what size cylinder did you use and aprox how much psi is it set for? How wide face is your rack and what dp?
