I intend building a cnc milling machine. The size will be 600mm x 400mm. What size threaded rod should I use for the lead screws? I have 6mm and 8mm stainless steel threaded rod. Will either of these be suitable or should I go bigger? I have not come across Acme threaded rod here in South Africa, so I will have to use normal threaded rod. The machine will be built from 25mm x 25mm x 2mm square aluminium tube. I intend using it for light work - PCB milling & drilling, milling plastic & maybe some wood. I want to make the anti backlash nut from tufnol. I seen it somewhere on the net.
Also what can I do to support the free end of the threaded rod. I don't have access to a lathe so I cannot turn the ends down!
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Many thanks! I knew I could get help on this forum. I have 30 of the skate bearings. Got them for R2.50 each (South African Rands) which is approximately 32c (American). These bearings have an OD of 22mm and an ID of 8mm.
Got the bearings from Zhous. They have a branch in Durban & the head office is in Johannesburg. Durban no is 031 306 7955. Jhb is 011 397 7788. They may have branch in Cape. I bought 30 bearings @ R2.50 each inclusive of VAT. Can't get better than that. The other big bearing supplier quoted me R40 each - you should know who!!
The bearing is a 608.
Where you situated?

I would really like to find a reasonably priced supplier for linear bearings & slides etc here in SA. The few places I found have killer industrial prices. Please let me know if you come across someone local.
