A decent sized DC motor (or servo) and belt drive will do that pretty easy.
Even moving your reduced load of 5 pounds the whole thing will need to be securely bolted down...![]()
For such a light load, you might look at this thread:

I'm torn between a belt drive or a rack and pinion system with the motor stationary and the rack moving - that idea isn't real fleshed out yet, just thought of it.
At this point the difference is cost, this is an out of pocket proof of concept for a research project, so there is no funding till later
I still haven't got the the complete go ahead to post our use case (sigh), but the short version is I need to move a sensor package/probe out of a rest position then rapidly back and forth as it scans with strokes of varying length. Faster is better, but cost is big deal right now. if we can get to one 6-inch read each direction (one stroke) per second we should be able to prove our point. I don't have access to machining equipment unfortunately, so I'm stuck with with more expensive off the shelf options. I do have a so/so drill press and a welder though....
Thanks for the ideas so far!

ok, I don't think I could get a stationary motor/mobile rack stable enough. I was thinking of using the carriage and Nema 34 drive kits from cncrouterparts, but I can't help but wonder if the belt drive would be cheaper?
You can get alot of info of the Breco site, they have some nice products for belt application and also engineering and sizing programs.

Thanks, that's great!
I just realized how much a nema 34 stepper motor could weigh, so have the motor stationary and moving the rack might be more feasible than I thought; I'm going to look into that and the belt drives I believe...
nema 34's with a 5ptich rack, direct drive, 48volts. I only have 16" of travel on my X (y isnt complete) and i get 750ish imp non-rapid, it never reaches peak velocity, goes right from accel to decell
Mind if I ask which motors you are running? torque, etc?
Thanks!
