HELP - Belt/Pulley Selection - What Pitch? too many choices!?

Good Morning,

I would like to get some technical advice on which Pulley and belt drive system would be best to purchase for my CNC machine upgrade.

I am upgrading my CNC machine from:

Direct connection Stepper Motor
Lead Screw drive

TO

Reducer Belt/Pulley connection for AC Servos.
5mm Pich Ball Screw.


My question is what Belt system is best to use for this application. I have not been able to find information regarding the differences between:

MXL, XL, L, GT2,HDT, T2.5, T5, T10

My question/Advice:

If I am looking to reduce the servo, Do I need to match the pitch of the belt to the pitch of the ball screw (5mm = HDT,GT2,T5)?


I also want to make sure I am not upgrading components with quality products - ball screw and servo - only to create precision and accuracy problems by purchasing the wrong belt and pulley system.


the belt/drive calculator at SDP-SI.com will definitely assist in selecting which sized and toothed pulley to purchase, but as mentioned, I am uncertain of which pitch to match to my 5mm ball screw. Any advice is much appreciated before making this purchase.

I tend to use the GT2 Gates belts. Readily available here in the USA and they are the most recent development.

The machine we're developing right now is using GT2 5MM pitch belts and sprockets. They are available 2MM, 3MM, 5MM, 8MM and 14MM pitch.
