A question for the THK experts, are the rails for SHS25 and HSR25 blocks interchangeable? According to this article "THK Bearing FAQ" they are, but I'm not so sure. I have a reason for asking but I will explain when I get more info. Thanks for the help. Last edited by ger21; 03-23-2010 at 03:42 PM. |

Hi, no they're not cross compatible, unfortunately. The SHS type rail is not as high as the HSR, and has a slightly different profile. If you are considering switching from the HSR type you should be aware that the SHS type is less tolerant of debris in the bearing than the HSR. If you can keep the chips out though, they're MUCH smoother. Best regards, Jason

Thank you Jason, you have confirmed what I figured out the hard way. The article is clearly mistaken when saying they are interchangeable. So now I have some new SHS25 blocks without rails and some new HSR25 blocks with rails. I guess my choise is kinda clear since the SHS25 rails are not as common as the HSR line.

Perhaps they meant that the bearings can be removed and replaced on their respective rails without the balls falling out - that seems to be the focus of the article? You can quickly tell the difference between the HSR and SHS type by looking at the bottom of the rail - HSR has two wider rebates, while the SHS has a single wide rebate down the middle and a narrow groove on one side. What length rails would you need? We have some short offcuts but nothing in a really useful length. Best regards, Jason Edit - sorry, the rail ID scheme might not hold water! Best to measure the height to confirm the type perhaps. Last edited by Jason3; 03-23-2010 at 05:57 PM.

I really like what Bob is doing HERE. I would not need very long rails, I want to make something that can do Aluminum and with a X/Y in the 12" ea range. I have some SHS15V rails and blocks I can use for a Z axis already. Here are some pictures of the HSR rails.

Oops. I stand corrected - if those are HSR type rails, then it appears my advice above is wrong - my sincere apologies. The machine in the link is a nice tidy job - would be good to see it working. The spare rails we have are probably only between 120 and 255 mm in length unfortunately. You're welcome to them if they're any use, but the postage might make it a bit uneconomic - maybe you could pick some up on Ebay? Best regards, Jason
