    Default Ballscrew length

    Hi guys.
    A noob here.
I have a cheap Chinese CNC 3020 off eBay.

I've fixed up electronics somewhat so it no longer looses steps and more or less it works fine for me.

Lately I've been contemplating doing a few upgrades and decided to start with changeover from acme leadscrews to ballscrews.
I measured my z axis screw and it has a length of 145mm and threaded portion is 120mm.
I've looking aplace over eBay to find a suitable size(length) ballscrew, but no luck at all. They all start at 250mm..

Where do people usually source ballscrews? I'm sure I'm not the only one owning a cheap Chinese machine like that..and people must have upgraded?

Aliexpress has quite a few ball screw sellers and most will do the custom machining required. I'd recommend making an accurate drawing of your machine, then use that to determine the proper length for the ball screw.

Right! That actually makes sense, thanks.
I was wondering why some of the sellers there were selling unmachined ballscrews. Now it all ads up

Some people actually machine their own ball screws. I do. As for length, most people have them custon machined, or just order them long and cut them off.

I wish I was able to machine them myself. Alas, doing so to the desired level of accuracy etc is beyond me.

You have a very short screw - you do realise once you replace the nut with ballscrew and mount you will lose approx 40 - 50mm of your travel?

Hmm wasn't really aware of that. Thanks from pointing it out.

Wouldn't i be able to just reuse existing bearings and mount ballscrew into those? If I look at ballscrew version of my machine(3020z) it doesn't seem to have anything more than just simple bearings.. at least on the z axis.

I was able to find a huge range of ballscrew lengths on Ebay. Many of the vendors have text saying that they will custom machine a shorter length. Also, you only need to find a length that is +/- 50mm to your target. The floating end support is has a bearing that can be pushed slightly in either direction to get you an exact dimension.

Most of my workload consists of XY cuts. I just upgraded my X and X axis, leaving an acme screw in my Z axis. I cut between 40-60 ipm and set my Z speed to 20 ipm. It doesn't add that much extra run time. I assume that gravity will help reduce any Z-height backlash.

I have a custom maker if you need one, very cheap. I think my 300mm 1204 was under 30$ with ballnut.
