Sub pixel Laser engraving polycarbonate

Hello,

I wanted to ask if anyone here knows if it's safe (health wise) to laser engrave polycarbonate.

We have a Nd:YVO4 crystal, Diode pumped, 532nm glass engraver that engraves inside glass/crystals.

We recently tried engraving inside armored glass with polycarbonate glued inside and got a burnt effect, as can be seen here:

I don't think toxic fumes are being released because the engrave is actually done INSIDE the material, but i'm uncertain.

I wanted to make sure it's safe for the operator before we do further testings with polycarbonate.

There is people behest and against it, but the best answer what I find was;
" A simple rule of thumb: if you can smell it, exhaust it."
