Weird engraving

At my school (I am a student, but I am the only one who knows our equipment), we have a VersaLaser VL-200. My school wants me to engrave 25 footballs, as they are always stolen. What is the best method to engrave these? (Polyurethane spray, engraving tape, etc.)

Ok, there is no problem doing engraving on ball. Usually ball is made from natural or synthetic leather. Engraving on both materials are perfect - see picture. I see possible problem only ON WAY OF ENGRAVING. Best way is engrave on ball with air inside. But I am afraid that it will not fit inside your laser. Possible solution is pull air from ball and try to flaten surface for engraving.

I'm not sure what happened to my reply - which was posted an hour or so after your question (anyway).

I suggested you cut a mask/template and spray paint the ball, it is almost impossible to remove but you can also directly engrave the ball if necessary.

A football to me is a round 'ball' that you kick with your foot but having lived in the states for over 10 years that weird shaped 'rugby ball looking' thing is growing on me.

OOOOOO! Sorry, I think that WEIRD is something like ON WHICH NECESSARY TO ENGRAVE.
For me engraving on leather ball is not WEIRD ENGRAVING
So I decide that WEIRD is something like sleng from american football and WEIRD is often stolen

actually, that is a soccer ball. many countries switch up the 2 names for different sports. this is the ball I am working with:
