Help required on Jiatai DPSS - 50w Laser

Hi

I m a newbie to LASERs. Last week my employer purchased an chinese (Jiatai Laser) make Diode side pump 50 w laser machine from a trade fair suddenly .

The primary use of that machine will be to mark serial nos. on Polycarbonate & other seals of plastics & metal. Besides marking logos on stainless Steel , Brass & Iron plates of door locks we make. We have been outsourcing the job since last three years and have been facing problems due to attitude of Job shops etc.

Last week my employer went to a trade fair where these Chinese were having a display and they convinced my employer for this machine and sold it.

The machine is here two days back and I have been assigned responsibility to run it. As Its my first exposure to DPSS laser ( I had worked on CO2 laser earlier but not too much). this machine is very different from Co2 laser .

In two days i have learnt software and operation of machine from Chinese but still there are certain things which I need to know. I need your help and support.

1. What is the maintenance requirements for this type of machine.

2. How to select marking speed, frequency and Voltage so that machine can be used for longer life. the Chinese have told me that the Diode laser source have a life of 5000 hrs to 15000 hrs. Its dependent on these three factors. Is i use more volatge , low speed and low frequency , the life time will decrease.
Kindly guide me on this.

3. How to calculate cost of a job. As my employer wish to calculate the cost of each job and even I want to know it. What is the formula or a thumbrule to ascertain the cost.

4. What are the other things which are to be kept in mind using these types lasers especially which material shall not be tried etc and what are the limitations.

5. Does these machines emit radiations...?

I look forward to your valued support. I have searched this forums and various other forums but unable to find answers to my queries

Thanks in anticipation

Regards

1. What is the maintenance requirements for this type of machine.
Take special care on lens. Very often some small particles can jump and stick to lens. After lens can be broken. I think you have water cooling? If yes - take special care on quality of cooling, especially in your climate. Stability of temperature is very important to keep laser working for long time.

IMHO You must select parameters to achieve BEST QUALITY. Laser must bring you money working and this money must cover all future spare parts and service purchase.

3. How to calculate cost of a job. As my employer wish to calculate the cost of each job and even I want to know it. What is the formula or a thumbrule to ascertain the cost.
Very popular calculation based on time of engraving. For example every day of operation schould bring you $100. So each minute must bring you 100/8 hours/ 60 minutes = $0,2
of course all digits are just for example and you must keep in mind some coefficients like time when you didn't work and etc.

5. Does these machines emit radiations...?
No radiation but better operate in special safety glasses.

I am not sure about DIOD lasers, but my past experience with LAMP laser show me that it's not possible engrave on glass, wood, paper. Engraving on metals with DPSS will be with slower speed than with lamp.
Our current partner in China cancel manufacturing of lamp lasers, and we decide stop sell of solid state lasers due higher price for DPSS and financial crisis. So really I do not have practice experience with DPSS - only theoretic.

thanks for the info.

i have tried marking on Paper & GLASS using my machine.

While it worked on paper (needs to be thick paper at-least 150 GSM ) and Glass ( coated, u might have seen side view mirrors in cars written with 'OBJECT IN THE MIRROR ARE CLOSER THEAN THEY APPEAR') but it didn't worked on Wood.

I tried various types of Plastics , it worked fine , as Polycarbonate are our main job, its is best on it, i have also tried it on Polypropylene and PVC and got good results.

Well One more thing where I need ur help. How to make Templates/ fixtures for holding objects. Which material I shall use to make templates . i need ur assistance as most of my products are smaller in size.

Looking forward to hear from u .

Call your local supplier of tampographic printing equipment (pad print). They have special flexible non-stick material to make templates
