Cutting Problems / Nozzle? - Mazak SuperTurbo Mark II 2500 Watt

Hi -

We just got a newly refurbished Mazak SuperTurbo Mark II 2500 Watt. Although we're entirely new to laser cutting, we did manage to get some programs to the NC and cut some parts. All went well...

We cut a small part from .032" SS at 2500 watts and saw some slag on the back of the part. As an experiment, we modified the cut conditions and tried to cut the part at only 1300 watts. ...This did NOT work. Since trying this, were having trouble making any kind of quality cut. The laser sparke and flames in odd ways and after about 10" of cutting length, fails to cut through the material.

Have we done some damage? The nozzle tip looks pretty rough - slight melting / burn. Is there anything else we should look at? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your help!

A.

If your tip is as bad as it sounds replace it. Could be a lot of things would have to see your perameters but if you cut the the wattage down by half how fast is your feed rate? You would want to slow that as well. Your gonna want to know some info about your dynamic powers when you start changing your perameters. You may also have to go through a lens and/or mirror adjustment.
