| How thick of metal Over the past year or so I have been in the market researching the best cnc plasma out there. However I am looking for better results for small hole finishes and what not. I am going to be cutting up to 1/4" maybe 3/8" steel sheet and am looking at cutting small 3/16" holes in them. Is it possible to purchase such a laser for a homemade type setup? I am looking at just using a cnc plasma table type setup only for a cnc laser. Like I said I am all new to the laser side of things and this could be one of the most outrageous questions asked, but I figure it was worth a shot. I have done no research as to how many watts it takes to cut this thickness nor do I know if you can purchase such laser except in an industrial made machine. Thanks Alot, |

| Cutting Metal You will need atleast a 400 watt laser to cut the 3/16" steel. I am guessing close to 1000 for 3/8". But I think you will find out that its going to be tough just to strap on a laser that big onto your homemade machine....You need a way tracking the metal and keep a consistent focus for the laser beam. Some call this a Height Follower. This is very crucial when cutting metal with smaller lasers like this. You will need a oxygen assist as well. Also a way to modulate the laser to achieve no slag and optimal edge quality. PM me for additional info. Last edited by Derek Kern; 10-28-2008 at 11:33 AM. |
