G.Weike LC6090 - My experience

Hi there,

This is my first post in this forum.
I use a cnc router (homebuild) for the past few years, and I was thinking of a laser upgrade for a while now. Problem is to find a good / cheap / reliable system.
After a few searches on the Interweb, I found this forum, and after reading billions of posts (well, almost...) I have decided to go for a G.Weike laser.

I sent a mail to this company, and Tina, replied back to me with a few specs and good advices on the machine I need for my use (I will cut mainly 3mm plywood, and maybe a few bits of aluminium (rarely, but will be nice to know that I can do it). Contact with Tina was absolutely excellent, very informative, and another thing I found great, is that when I got the list of options that were available, she did not try to over sale, and gave me only what I needed!

So, I went for the LC6090, with 80w laser, and the automatic up/down table.
I have just received the PI, and paiement from the bank is on its way

I will keep you updated, as my experience might help someone else who want to take the plounge!

So far : Communication and knowledge/advices from Tina a G.Weike were all spot on! Tina made the entire process of ordering the machine very easy, friendly and always replied to my silly question very quickly. (yeah, I had a few stupid questions! )

Now it's up to the shipper here to continue to make this experience still enjoyable, so wait and see!

@ Rodney : I did a bit of reseaches also, and asked other "main" (or whatever you call the more expensive cnc manufacturers ) and all of them came back to me saying that I can indeed, cut aluminium (well, all I want to be able to cut, are aluminium sheets, 1.5 to 2mm thick max), but this is not my main material, so I am not too worried anyway for that.

@ Dave : Thanks. I have also read your experience so far, and I totally agree with you on all the points you made. So far, my experience is very pleasant, and I deal with people who knows what they are doing! Mine should be shipped sometimes before the Chinese Public holidays, but I am not in any particular rush. My aim is to be fully operational sometimes in March, but I am really forward to receive the machine and do my first cuts!

@Melody : Please pass my thanks to Tina, and so far, my experience with your company was A1! I plan to buy a bigger one next year, and one thing is sure, that will come from your company!

I don't know who told you you will be able to cut aluminum with 80W but I hate to tell you that it's not going to happen at all. I doubt you could even cut aluminum foil with 80W...

The "main" CNC manufacturers you probably asked are selling several thousand watt CO2 lasers. They can cut aluminum, but usually only very thin stuff. Aluminum spreads heat around too fast, makes it very hard to cut with heat.

As well as an 80 watt budget laser I have two Mitsubishi 3600 watt metal cutting lasers and even those struggle with aluminium of any serious thickness.
Yes you can cut some metals with an 80 watt tube but only up to 0.5mm thick and even then only with special lens's and cooling and possibly exotic assist gasses.

Anybody that tells you it's possible to cut 2mm aluminium with a budget CO2 laser is basically wrong no matter who they are or what they are trying to sell you.

hi dave,first,we are very glad that you are a helpful person and kindhearted,maybe you are not so clear about Fred's requirement,we already talked about the cutting aliuminum from the first email.we are a laser machine manufacture for more than 8years,and have much experience on it,we are not telling laser machine can cut aliuminium sheet,but it really can cut the coated aliuminium.maybe you need to learn about the spray.because it sell in your country

Tina - are you referring to engraving / marking on coated or anodized aluminum, or marking on metals with some of the coating sprays (like Thermark)? Not cutting through the metal itself, but marking on it?

Thanks for the kind words, I think some of what you are saying is lost in translation (although your English is far better than my Chinese for sure).

What may be confusing some people is the difference between surface marking bare aluminium, surface marking using compounds like Cermark / Thermark and marking Anodised aluminium.

As I'm sure you know surface marking of bare aluminium is not possible with a standard laser setup unless specialist lens systems are used and high power tubes.

Marking ONTO aluminium is possible with products like thermark / cermark.

Marking ONTO anodised aluminium is again possible as it is the coating or anodise that is being marked and NOT the substrate metal.

Anodise or aluminium hydroxide looks very much like a honeycomb under magnification and the dye particles are contained in each of the combs giving the colour, the base metal has no colour and is still impervious to low power budget laser systems.

I was a little concerned that the loss in translation may leave people believing that budget lasers will mark direct onto bare aluminium which is something that is not going to happen.

After a long absence, I am back!
And with good news, as the machine landed in my garage yesterday afternoon!!
I will open the crate Saturday, and will report on the machine with photos etc etc.
