reviews of laser protective glasses and goggles?

Can anyone post about a particular type of glasses they bought that seem to be doing a good job? I have read the previous threads on here and have gone to the sites but the prices for laser safety glasses range from $30 to $500. If I had to pay $500 to protect my eyes of course I'd do it but I was hoping someone would know whether that was necessary. I run a 10.6um CO2 laser at 100watts. Thanks for any help you guys

I personally take the approach of not looking at the laser while it's running. I may be wrong, but the way it was explained to me was. The beam is incapable of penetrating the lexan cover on enclosed machines. HOWEVER looking at the laser's point of impact is like looking at a welder. The brightness of the reaction of the material can cause damage from the ultra bright light created, such as the wood igniting due to the intense heat it creates a very bright flame. Now I'm not a Dr, or a specialist so don't take my word for it at ALL! Please! Also here are some reasonably priced glasses for 10.6

My laser is enclosed by acrylic but to lessen the brightness I bought a pair of shade 4 welding goggles from mcmaster that seem to work pretty good, but I think bpoulin is right about trying to look at the laser as little as possible.

i have a 100w (class iv), will buy a pair of googles in germany/austria, anyone has any tips? best

To shield your eyes from the bright light, you should use tinted goggles or maybe even sunglasses are enough depending on what you are cutting. To shield your eyes from the 10.6 um radiation, you need something that is opaque to that wavelength but still optically clear so you can see. Polycarbonate (which almost all "safety glasses" are made from absorbs almost 100% of that wavelength. Normal safety glasses is all I wear when working on the laser. Common sense will prevail.
